Editor’s note: In a contribution to Naij.comHussain Obaro calls Alhaji Yahaya Bello, the new Kogi state governor-elect, “the change that has finally come to Nigerian youth”. Why?

The sudden and untimely demise of Prince Abubakar Audu, when he was just about clinching the people’s mandate, with no doubt offered an opportunity for the political gladiators to inherit the votes meant for the APC and its late gubernatorial candidate in the November 21 election. It is no longer news that the Igala-dominated eastern senatorial district has ruled Kogi state since its creation in August 27, 1991. Not even the various protests, agitations and struggles for power, or what was tagged the power shift, has been able to make the Igala abandon their oligarchic pursuit of the Igala agenda.
The end of the Igala domination
In a bid not to shoot itself on the foot by giving the opposition political parties a legal lapse to capitalize on the election tribunal, the APC decided to heed the advice of their legal experts to pick a replacement for the late Prince Audu to complete the remaining supplementary election in line with the INEC guideline. Luckily for the Ebira-dominated central senatorial district of the state, which had been at the forefront of the clamour and agitation for the power shift since 1999, the 1st, 2nd, 3rd and 4th runners-up happened to come from the district. Expectedly, the decision of the APC to pick a gubernatorial candidate from the central senatorial district has thrown the whole city into the celebration mood, as the respite can be said to have finally come to a people, which has been witnessing the worst form of injustice and marginalization.
It is, however, unfortunate and at the same time funny that some people in the eastern senatorial district, misled by the unscrupulous and desperate politicians, decided to cripple the economic and social activities in the name of protesting against the nomination of Alhaji Yahaya Bello of the APC a couple of days to the supplementary election. The fact that a people, which has ruled the state since its creation, can still take to the streets against the nomination of a candidate merely because he is not an Igala man is ridiculous. It is the height of moral bankruptcy, political intolerance and ethnic chauvinism.

Just like the PDP arrogantly proclaimed that they would rule Nigeria for 50 years, the politicians and individuals of Igala origin have been boasting at different forums that not only will they continue to dominate the political scene in Kogi state until the second Coming of Christ – an Igala man will rather vote for a mad person from Igala land than a sane person from another place. But by what can best be described as a divine intervention and an answered prayer to the yearning and aspirations of the people from Kogi central and of course the power shift agitators, God himself has rotated power in Kogi state.

Alhaji Yahaya Bello – a new hope of Nigerian youth
Although Honorable James Faleke, the running mate to the late APC guber candidate, has some issues with the fact that he has been bypassed by the party, this is not the time for him to embark on the time-wasting and unnecessary litigation just to satisfy his selfish interests. He should swallow his pride and join hands with the incoming administration of Alhaji Yahaya Bello in providing good governance to the Kogi people. Hon Faleke should realise that this is the only time in the history of Kogi that the Igala tribe will have no choice but to watch the events in the state from the sideline.
This is an opportunity to right all the wrongs of the past; this is the time for the equitable distribution of the state resources and development of the state regardless of the political party affiliation. Alhaji Yahaya Bello has made history as the youngest APC governor in the current dispensation at the age of 40. Hence, the victory of Yahaya Bello is not only significant for the people of the Kogi central district, but the entire youth population of Kogi state and Nigeria in general. Indeed, the generational change that the Nigerian youths have always been yearning and clamoring for is finally here!
